“An Alphabet of Inspiration” Highlights 100 Years of Collections
BOSTON, MA – June 20, 2013 – Boston Children’s Museum recently pulled back the curtain and unveiled 24 window display cases with each window representing a letter of the alphabet and featuring objects from the Museum’s collection.Boston Children’s Museum has been planning for its 2013 centennial anniversary for several years. In 2011, staff began discussing the idea of coordinating a Museum-wide redesign of the 24 window cases that are found along the first, second and third floor bridges. Once the Museum’s exterior windows, these vitrines, are now displaying treasures from the Museum’s vast collection of cultural, historical and natural history objects, and interpreted by artistsThe idea for “An Alphabet of Inspiration,” derives from a project at the Museum nearly 30 years ago in a publication and exhibit that highlighted the collection, with objects grouped by letter of the alphabet and photographed. Now, with 24 window spaces, Museum staff and guest artist/curators have created installations devoted to each of the letters in the alphabet from A-XYZ. The overarching theme is simple, accessible to its audience, and provides many opportunities to engage artists, friends, and the community.

Art originated early in human history, before societies formed or the invention of written language. Over the centuries, the definition of “art” has been disputed and re-developed continually. Inevitably artists are intrigued by the history, traditions and “rules” that make up the contemporary art world. The need to reference, critique, play and draw attention to the context of art within art is a natural progression. We call this “META”. The discussion has expanded beyond the history and process of art to include visual interpretations of the art world itself: the infrastructure, politics and economies of art. Inspiration emerges from admiration to disgust. Meta demonstrates the vast use of this self-referential concept in video, photography, painting, drawing, and sculpture.

The BIG BAD

Reception: October 6, 2012 5-7PM

In a land not so far away, where everything seems quite big and terribly bad, The Nave Gallery presents visions of The BIG BAD. Whether it be the repo man, banks, politicians, the ex, the evil step-parent, the monster in the closet, the tick-tock of a bad heart, The BIG BAD explores the true representations of the foes that wreck our homes, our health, our families, our childhoods. The bump in the dark of night, the shadow lurking in the corner of your eye, those things that haunt us even if we’ve buried it four times over, The BIG BAD aspires to show that the real-world adversaries threatening our ruin are close companions to the phantoms locked in our imaginations.
